Wells Gray Community Forest Corporation (WGCFC) marked National Forest Week this year with a series of engaging activities that brought the community closer to nature and promoted sustainable forest management practices.
On September 24, WGCFC hosted educational activities at the Raft River Elementary Outdoor Classroom. Students participated in hands-on stations, including tree ring analysis, forest ecosystems exploration, storytelling, and a creative art activity. These stations encouraged students to learn about trees, forest health, and the importance of connecting with nature through both education and creativity.
The following day, September 25, WGCFC facilitated an immersive experience in a recently harvested forest area. The site showcased updated water management strategies designed to enhance sustainability and forest regeneration. Members of the Canim Lake and Simpcw First Nations communities participated in hands-on activities that fostered cross-cultural dialogue. The event highlighted the value of Indigenous knowledge in sustainable forest management, providing participants with a unique opportunity to share insights and learn from one another through shared stewardship of the land.
“We were thrilled to host these events as part of National Forest Week,” shared George Brcko, General Manager of WGCFC. “By combining education, knowledge, and hands-on experiences, we’re helping to deepen understanding and appreciation for the forests we all depend on.”
WGCFC’s annual participation in National Forest Week reinforces its ongoing commitment to community engagement, sustainable forestry, land management and forestry education.
