WGCF Governance: Three Teams, One Mission

The WGCF stands apart from other community forests through its unique governance model. Refined over several iterations, the current organisational structure ensures that most of the revenues generated flow directly back into the community—and that these benefits are distributed fairly and transparently. In a nutshell, the Wells Gray Community Forest Society 2010 is a charitable organisation that owns a corporation—the Wells Gray Community Forest Corporation. The Corporation itself consists of two distinct teams: the Board of Directors and the Operations Team. Although they perform different functions, all three groups share the same vision: a forest managed by the community, for the benefit of the community.

The Society is operated by seven volunteers who serve as its directors. Five are selected from among the residents of Wells Gray Country by the sitting members of the Society. The remaining two are appointed by elected officials from the two local governments: the District of Clearwater and TNRD Area “A”. Because the Society is a charitable organisation, it must remain at arm’s length from the Corporation and cannot be involved in its operations. To ensure proper oversight, the Society appoints an independent Board of Directors to govern the Corporation and ensure it runs effectively.

The Board of Directors of the Corporation is composed of eight members. Seven are appointed by the Society, and one is appointed by the Simpcw Nation. This volunteer board draws on members with expertise in areas such as finance, governance, risk management, and public relations. Naturally, several directors also bring extensive experience in the forest industry. Together, they support and oversee the General Manager, who is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Company.

The General Manager is hired by, and reports to, the Board of Directors. The GM leads the Operations Team, which also includes a Junior Forester. These are full-time paid positions. Their role is to carry out the organization's vision: they are the “boots on the ground”, performing the technical work and interacting directly with the stakeholders of the Wells Gray Community Forest.
